two brainsVirtualisation delivers the computer you need to use to your business when you want it, wherever you are. Guy Clapperton and Maggie Philbin take a look at the options available at the momentMoperating system hadn’t entered the public consciousness and comput-ers didn’t multitask. If you wanted to switch from a word processor to a spreadsheet you had to shut down Moperating syst
ainstream computing changed forever on 22 May 1990. Until that point the Windows one program, enter a string of com-mands and start the other. The release of Windows 3.0 changed all of that and within a very short while people could switch between applications at will with a few keystrokes. It saved time and consequently it saved on power consumption.Hard Talk Virtualisation means it’s possible to use one computer instead of many – but there are storage implications to consider. page 4At the threshold of another decade the same idea has reached its logical conclusion. You can not only switch between programs on a computer, from one screen you can switch be-tween ‘computers’. Of course these aren’t real, physical computers but ‘virtual’ systems – an entirely different desktop computer or server is deliv-ered to the same hardware you were already using. The business case is a no-brainer; whether at server or desk-top level you can have more than one computer occupying the same physi-cal space and consuming the same power of a single computer, or fewer computers, than you had before, with no degradation in performance.Green piece Costs are one thing but carbon footprint and other ecological considerations are important too. We explore some of the issues. page 6Steve Nunn, Head of Green at Ac-centure, describes the idea as the next generation of datacentres. “It’s a matter of taking the assets you’ve got and making the most of them,” he says. The major cultural shift for a lot of organisations is that since it becomes a service rather than a piece of hardware, he points out, Tomorrow’s World Ideally virtualisation should be part of anevolving process. Maggie Philbin looks at what’s coming in the next few years. page 18UP TO 75% SAVING WHEN REPLACING YOUR OLD SERVERS!
